Capt. Edmund (Mun) Maskelyne , dsp "A few days before Edmund, the father's death, Elizabeth Maskelyne asked the duke of Newcastle for a clerkship in his office for Edmund, his second son (Elizabeth M to Newcastle, 7 March 1743/4; BL MS Add.32702, f.173) William Maskelyne's letter to Newcastle, of july 1753 (BL MS Add.32732, f.389)asking the latter to sponsor him as Professor of hebrew, makes it clear that it was through Newcastle's influence that Edmund obtained the East India Company writership." married twice, but d.s.p. Close friend of Robert Clive. He was sent to Madras as a Writer at the same time as Robert Clive and was closely involved in India with him. He joind the EIC through the influence of the Duke of Newcastle. Of Basset Down House and of Purton, Capt. H.E.I.C's. service. He had a third cousin called John Coxe from whom he bought Basset Down. John Coxe married Margaret Hippisley bap. 12 Dec 1692 in Stonn Easton, in 1709 at Leigh, Wilts. That year John Coxe bought Basset Down for the sum of £4000 from Margaret's uncle William York. (3) pp. 23-6, 104-69, 208-57, Extracts from the Orme MSS. of Papers written by or supplied by Clive regarding his early military career, including letters from Capt. John Dalton and James Repington (p. 319, had previously served the Company as a Lieutenant at St. Helena), Thomas Saunders and Robert Palk; also, pp. 123-40, Accounts of the siege of Arcot by a Sergeant and by Dr. Wilson. (On p. 128 the Sergeant mentions the possibility of reduction by famine, which on p. 132 he says has been obviated. On p. 139 Dr. Wilson says a vast number of cattle were taken into the Fort. On p. 258 Saunders notes, 4th Sept. 1751, that he intends to lay in as large a stock of Provisions as he can, and, p. 263, on 21st Oct. 1751, notes a letter from Clive saying that he is invested in the Fort but has three months' provisions. The only evidence supporting the statement that the garrison suffered from Famine is Clive's deposition, p. 330B, that Frenchmen amongst the besiegers made it a custom to "upbraid them with their want of Provisions.")
