John Prinsep , alderman of the City of London. MP for Queenborough 1802-6; Contested Colchester 1806; Bailiff Southwark 1817-24; master Skinners 1805. He had been an indigo planter and he wrote a Review of the Tade of the East India Company. John Prinsep made a considerable fortune (later lost) through indigo trading in India, and introduced the printing of cotton fabrics into Bengal . He returned to England in 1788 and settled at Thoby Priory in essex. His sons, Henry and James, were distinguished Indian administrators. 'India politics over the way are as corrupt and as ill conducted as ever; if something be not soon done, to give energy to our Government abroad, and a rational system imposed on our Directors respecting their Commerce, India will not long be ours; or if it remain attatched, will become a burthen instead of a support to the Mother Country.'
