, 7th son. See DNB Vol. 16. Antiquary and colonial administrator in India, the first European scholar to decipher the edicts of the ancient Indian emperor Ashoka. Architect by training; assay master at mints at Calcutta (1819, 1832-38) and at Benares (1820-30); at Calcutta introduced a uniform coinage and reformed system of weights and measures; as secretary of Asiatic Society of Bengal (1832-38) he amassed large collection of Indian coins.
