John
Pulleine
(Pulleyn/Pulleyne), eldest son. "John Pulleyn, the former school teacher of Guy Fawkes was not descended from the Scotton Pulleyn family as outlined by several sources including Eric Simons The Devil of the Vault - John Pulleyn was probably related to a family of the same name living in Scotton, Yorkshire....The son of a Yorkshire vicar with a parish in that county, Pulleyn died in 1590. " "The headmaster in Guys boyhood was a John Pulleyn, B.A., who held the position from 1575 until his death in 1590. There is no foundation for the statement that he was a member of the Scotton family. In the will of Peter Pulleyn of the parish of St. Michael, Ousebridge, York made on 19 July 1578, he is mentioned as, John Pulleyne, scholemaster.....this Peter Pulleyn was cousin to Sir John Pulleine, vicar of Fuiston whowas a legatee, as also was his brother Sir Henry Pulleine, clerk; and we have proved by means of the Knaresborough Court Rolls that theschoolmaster was in fact the eldest son of Henry Pulleyn, the legatee just named, and was of the family of Pulleyn of Blubberhouse." Headmaster of St. Peter's School, York. He called himself a Protestant (or else he could not have held this post) but his family as a whole were well known Yorkshire recusants. Many of his pupils showed strong Catholicism later in life. The Gunpowder Plot, by Antonia Fraser, ISBN 029781348X
