He had, in fact, retired from the army early 1841. Grave at Ferozepre - "Sacred to the memory of Lt. G.H. Smith H.Ms 44th Regt Died 13th Sept 1841 as a token of love from his wife." Haddon Smith was in 73rd Regiment of Foot, Army Lists show his name 1794-1831. He may have been in India 1815-1820. The big question being the father of Henry Smith? The time and place is pretty correct for him to be the son of Major Haddon Smith, but I cannot get any evidence for this.
