Rev. Sydney
Smith
1771 - 1845

Rev. Sydney
Smith
, Canon of St. Paul's. Issue. The National Portrait Gallery in London holds 6 portraits. Sydney Smith's ancestors have eluded me for three years. He was of little help, asked about his grandfather he replied, with becoming gravity "He disappeared about the time of the assizes, and we asked no questions." In fact the grandfather is supposed to have come to London from Devonshire, established a business in Eastcheap, and left it to his two sons, Robert and James Smith. Robert, (1739-1827), made over his share to James and went off to see the world. He settled down 'in old age' at Bishop's Lydeard, marrying Maria Olier, 'a pretty girl of French descent'. By her he had five children, all born at different addresses, if not in different counties. Robert Percy (aka 'Bobus') born in 1770; Sydney in 1771; Cecil in 1772; Courtnay in 1773 and Maria in 1774. Sydney Smith was born on 3rd June; baptized 1st July in the parish Church of Woodford, Essex and spent his infancy at South Stoneham, near Southampton. He was elected a Scholar of Winchester College on 19th July 1782, where he stayed for six years, working his way to the top of school, being "Prefect of Hall" when he left in 1788. Most of the above from 'Sydney Smith' by George W E Russell, published by MacMillan, 1905. ------------ Canon Sydney Smith was the 2nd gr grandfather of the husband of a Mary Clutterbuck. She was married to Thurstan Holland-Hibbert, 4th Visct Knutsford, on 9 June 1888. At a 'Sydney Smith' week end at Comb Flory some years ago I met their son, who was a bit miffed to find that he was not the only one in the group with a link to the rev. gentleman! (He was even more miffed by a cousin of mine who during WW II was brought up in the 'big house' of an estate in Wiltshire, while he had been confined to the dower house, we discovered). Her father was Thomas Meadows Clutterbuck, of Putteridge Bury, (not so far from Watford). Yours Aye Andrew Sellon Y
