, 2nd son. went to Ireland as a military officer in 1634 under the rule of Charles I and settled in Co. Galway, where he `acquired' considerable landed property under the `Plantation of Connacht' instigated by the then Lord Deputy of Ireland, Thomas Wentworth. He would have initially lived in Cargin Castle but a house of some description was built in Clydagh woods at this time.
