Charles William Vane Stewart 1778 - 1854
Charles William Vane Stewart , Charles William Stewart was born in Dublin in 1778 and had a distinguished military career under the Duke of Wellington and an equally successful diplomatic career subsequently, as did his half-brother, Viscount Castlereagh. On 3rd April 1819 he married Lady Frances, now described as the most desirable heiress in England, as his second wife; but although he took the surname Vane the marriage was against the wishes of her family, who, anxious to ensure that Stewart could not become the owner of Lady Frances' considerable estates, forced through a legal settlement to make him only her tenant, for life. General and diplomat; one of the foremost participants in the Napoleonic War and its political aftermath. As a dashing cavalry officer Stewart acted as Wellington's Adjutant-General, 1809-12, distinguishing himself at the Douro, Talavera and Badajoz. As Ambassador to Vienna, 1814-23, he assisted his half-brother, Lord Castlereagh, and afterwards Wellington, in the peace negotiations.
