Sothebys sold a portrait: HUGH DOUGLAS HAMILTON, 1739-1808 PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM POWER KEATING TRENCH, 1ST EARL OF CLANCARTY 24x19.5cm.; 9.5x7.75in. pastel, oval PROVENANCE Commissioned from the artist by the sitter; by descent to the present owner CATALOGUE NOTE William Power Keating Trench was born in 1741 and was connected through his mother, Frances Power of Corheen, with Donough Maccarthy, fourth earl of Clancarty of the first creation. He married Anne Gardiner, daughter of the Right Hon. Charles Gardiner of Dublin, in 1762. He sat in the Irish parliament from 1769 to 1797 for the county of Galway, in which his seat, Garbally was situated. He was created an Irish peer on 25th November 1797, with the title of Baron Kilconnel of Garbally, and was further advanced as Viscount Dunlo on 3rd January 1801, and Earl Clancarty on 12th February 1803. He died on 27th April 1805 and was succeeded by his eldest surviving son, Richard Le Poer Trench. Estimate - 600-800
