Entered service of Duchess of York (1665); became (c.1667) mistress of duke, later James II; by enemies often credited with brother's rapid advancement. Mother by James of James Fitzjames, later Duke of Berwick; Henry Fitzjames, later Duke of Albemarle; and two daughters.
