William Ewart Gladstone 1809 - 1898
William Ewart Gladstone , MP (1841). Named after a merchant of Liverpool, a friend of his father. He was educated in a school on the sands at Bootle (Seaforth Vicarage) before going to Eton in 1821. From there he went to Christ Church Oxford between 1828 and 1831. In 1831 he spoke at the Oxford Union against the Reform Act, saying that any electoral reform would lead to revolution. His Degree was in Classics but he also studied Mathematics and in 1831 was awarded a Double First in the subjects. Prime Minister 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886-94. At the 1880 general election, Gladstone was returned as MP for both Leeds and Edinburghshire at the General Election. He chose to sit for Edinburghshire; his son Herbert was elected for Leeds and his son William was elected for Worcestershire East. He inherited the abandoned Liverpool of the Gladstone family ca 1851, Seaforth House, and decided to develop it,
