[and h.] of James, solicitor, of St Giles's, Norwich [and Barbara Baseley]. B. there [Apr. 7], 1811. School, Eton. Matric. Michs. 1830; B.A. 1835. Assumed the additional surname and arms of Tooke, by Royal licence, Aug. 30, 1842, on inheriting property at Thompson, Norfolk, from his maternal uncle; later exchanged this property with Lord Walsingham for Copdock and Washbrook; also inherited property from his paternal uncle, John Turner Hales (1792), which he sold. C. of Barton Mills, Suffolk, 1841-5. C.-in-charge of Bradwell, Essex. V. of Scawby, Lincs., 1846-67 (Crockford assigns this incumbency to John Tooke-Hales). An active magistrate, and a Whig, though brought up a Tory. Afterwards lived on his estate in Suffolk. `A somewhat eccentric person, who did much for his parishioners, whom he ruled with a rod of iron.' Died unmarried Dec. 25, 1875. Brother of George (1846).
