Sarah Jennings 1660 - 1744
Sarah Jennings , co heiress. Entered service of Duke of York (1673) and soon became trusted friend of Princess Anne; lady of the bedchamber (1683); helped Anne to escape (1688); helped effect reconciliation of Anne and William III (1694); gained ascendancy over her on her accession as queen; as mistress of robes and keeper of privy purse, controlled Whig ministry, deducted pension for herself; finally by imperious and tactless behaviour alienated Queen Anne and dismissed (1711); succeeded by her cousin Abigail Hill (Mrs. Masham).
