Johann Ludwig Knoop , "The first power-driven cotton mill was established in Russia in 1840 by Ludwig Knoop, a young man who had learned the business at Manchester. " Cotton merchant of Bremen and of St. Magnus. He studied in Bremen, Manchester and as a representative of de Jersey & Co., went to Moscow where he built a spinning mill factory and also despite import difficulties, imported cotton from England. In the end there were 187 factories in Russia. In 1857 he built the largest cotton spinning mill in Europe at Narva which employed 12,000 people. "It was in gratitude to Knoop's contribution to the Russian economy that Czar Alexander II bestowed upon him the title of Baron in 1877."
