Sir John George Lambton 1792 - 1840
Sir John George Lambton , English politician. Whig M.P. (1813-28); proposed scheme of parliamentary reform rejected as too advanced; privy councillor and lord privy seal in administration of his father-in-law, Lord Grey (1830-33); one of four who drew up the first Reform Bill; ambassador to St. Petersburg (1835-37). Governor general and lord high commissioner in Canada (1838); took statesmanlike action to placate rebellious Lower Canada but reviled in England for it; resigned (1838); attempted public justification by means of his Report on the Affairs of British North America (1839), outlining principles and schemes of British colonial policy adopted by his successors.
