MERRY Farmer Churchwarden a man of good private property & a very steady respectable man he has an estate of his own at Orwell holds one of Downing College in which he resides & has just taken a large Farm of Mr GAPEs up on the hill, above the Rectory. His wife is a London Lady they have 2 children they are very civil & friendly. [Chandler Merry (1812-1864) was born in Orwell. In the 1851 census for Croydon-cum-Clopton it was recorded he was 39, a farmer of 600 acres, and employer to 21 men and 8 boys.
