Vane Tempest formerly Vane
c. 1770 - 1813
Vane Tempest formerly Vane, "The origins of the Londonderry industrial empire in Durham go back to the Vanes of Long Newton and the Tempests of Wynyard, both in south-east Durham. The last of the male line, Sir Henry Vane Tempest, owned extensive coal interests at Pensher and Rainton; but he died in 1813, leaving as his heir his only daughter, Lady Frances Anne Vane Tempest, aged 13, which meant her estates went into the Court of Chancery and the estates were administered by trustees. As the Agent for their coal mines the trustees employed Arthur Mowbray, continuing to do so despite his bankruptcy in 1816.
