Samuel Whitbread 1764 - 1815
Samuel Whitbread , MP for Bedford, 1790; a remowned and influential opponent of all manner of oppression and abuse. "In the booklet Villages of North Bedfordshire it says "by the 18th century much of the lands in Southill were exchanged by the Ongleys with Samuel Whitbread for his estate in Old Warden". In 1795 Baron Byng sold Gastlyns (one of the manors in Southill Parish), to Samuel Whitbread. Gastlyns with other manors in the parish became part of the Whitbreads Southill Estate. .....Samuel Whitbread , who was responsible for many of the cottages in the village which bear his initials" The Treble Almanac 1812 (Dublin) lists him under House of Commons: Bedford Samuel Whitbread, esq. brother-in-law of earl Grey, (Dover st, Elstow Lodgem abd Bedwell park, in this county.)
