William Wilberforce 1759 - 1833
William Wilberforce , Anti-slavery campaigner. MP for Hull 1780-84, MP for Yorkshire 1784-1812.His father having died when he was young, William was brought up for a while by an aunt and uncle in Wimbledon. The aunt (half sister to John Thornton) was a strong supporter of John Wesley, so William's mother took him back. Educ. St. John's, Cambridge. Later he became a member of the Clapham Sect. Issue - 6 children.
