Jacob Julius Frericks formerly Frerichs 1841 - 1907
Jacob Julius Frericks formerly Frerichs, Descendents from Jacob: this line has been supplied by Joan Massie. Notes for *JACOB 'JULIUS' FRERICK * Julius and Albertine came to Queensland, Australia aboard the 'Rachel' in 1861. The ship's name was obtained from Julius' Naturalization Certificate as they are not on any of the Assisted Migrants Lists which means that they must have paid their own way and most of these lists are not available. * Julius Death Cert. said he had spent 2 years in Queensland and 42 in NSW, while Albertine's Death Cert. said she had been in NSW 29 years. The latter would be more accurate as Helena was born in Maryborough, Queensland in 1865 and Julius Albert in Nov.,1866 in the Macleay area NSW. * Julius became a naturalized Australian on 19 Jan 1866, under the name Julius Frerichs ( immigrants had to be in Aust. 5 years before becoming naturalized, which was necessary before purchasing land). -Naturalization Cert. No.5/1866, Item4/1202, Reel 130 page 69, registered in Sydney. * He purchased 15 acres fronting the Macleay River at Seven Oakes. This land was originally in a grant of 35 1/2 acres given in the early 1840's to Major Richard Henry Oaks, who had a squatting station there. Major Oaks was no great business man and ended up selling the land to the Saul's. (Julius could have bought the land from either Major Oaks or the Saul's.) # "Valley of the Macleay. Roll 835 The Hastings 1869-1870. Frerichs Julius Seven Oaks freehold Macleay River" # Seven Oaks is between the presentday Pacific Highway and Smithtown. * As the Macleay River was a flood prone area , the Frerichs family would have lived through a number of floods on their land. * There are none of the Frerichs children on the Seven Oakes School microfiche as the enrolments only go back to 1877 after they would have started school. Earlier records were lost in a fire. The school was eventually moved as the continual floods led to the school almost falling into the river. * Lucy told grandson, Ray Winter, that they had been sent money each year from Bremen to set themselves up and survive in Australia. I would imagine that the other Frerichs children who left Bremen for other countries would have been given the money also. * The changing of the spelling of 'Frerichs' to 'Frericks' as it is today, probably arose from the pronunciation, as the childrens' births, and Albertine's Death, are recorded with a 'k'. Residences -Maryborough, Queensland. Seven Oaks, Macleay River, NSW. Merrylands NSW Bayview, Pittwater NSW * Occupation - Was a storekeeper and sugarcane farmer at Seven Oaks (from Julius Albert's and Lucy's birth certificates), just north of Kempsey. # Brisbane Courier Monday 28 June 1869 page 4- "Mr. J. Frericks of Seven Oaks, and Mr.G.Gourlay, and Mr. J. Thurgood, of Darkwater appear to the largest sections under cane crop on the Macleay River, the former having 15 and the two latter gentlemen 10 acres each. The popular variety seems to be the ribbon variety. Cost of cultivation, 7pounds 3shillings per acre.” -Was a poultry farmer at Merrylands when he married Selina. -General labourer on his Death Cert. * On Julius and Selina's Marriage Cert. it states his name as Julius James Frerichs.
