On the death of Margaret Tyndall-Bruce in 1869 the Colonel changed his name to Hamilton-Tyndall-Bruce and inherited the estate through a Trust Disposition and Deed of settlement dated 1865. The heraldic description of the arms is Quarters, first and fourth, Or, a Saltire Glues on a Chief of the second a Fleur-de-lis of the first, for Bruce; second, Argent, a Fess Gules cottised Stable between three Garbs of the last, for Tyndall; third, Gules, a Cross potent fitchee Or between three Cinquefoils Argent, for Hamilton. In an Escrol below the sheild this motto, Fuimus. The crest is a horse's head erased Argent bridled Gules, and in an Escrol over the crest this motto, Be Trew. You can see the horse's head crest in a niche above the door to the flat at the gararge. This doorway used to be the entrance to the stables. His son sold the estate in 1887 to the 3rd Marquess of Bute. He was an army man who married later in life. He lived for a while at Hay Lodge in Peebles. ----------------- British Library: Name: Walter HAMILTON Event type: Biography Start date: 18 Mar Start year: 1788 End date: 06 Jul End year: 1874 Biographical notes: Madras Army, b 18 Mar 1788, ret 12 Apr 1834, d 6 Jul 1874 name altered to TYNDALL-BRUCE; m Margaret 5 Jan 1837 (b 4 Jan 1813, d 6 Jul 1874) Helen b 17 Mar 1838, d 17 Jan 1855 Catherine b 31 Jan 1839, d 13 Feb 1873 Andrew b 30 Mar 1842; Margaret b 18 May 1843, d 10 Jun 1869; Walter b 20 Apr 1845 Robert Thomas b 17 Sep 1846; Madeline b 22 May 1848, d 21 Jul 1852; a dau b 26 Oct 1850, d 15 Jul 1852; see Phillimore II p.403 Transcribed by: British Library India Office Records Reference: L/AG/23/10/1-2 Source name: Phillimore II p.403 Source year: Source edition: Presidency:
