Dr. William Hawes 1736 - 1808
Dr. William Hawes , MD Physician to the London Dispensary. . In 1773, according to the (December 1808) Gentleman's Magazine, "he became deservedly popular, from his incessant zeal in calling the attention of the publick to the resuscitation of persons apparently dead, principally by drowning." His early efforts were ridiculed, as few believed in possibility of resuscitation. Hawes persevered, and announced that he would reward anyone who rescued a seemingly drowned person between Westminister and London bridges, if they would give him immediate notice. co founder (1774) of the Royal Humane Society. He petitioned Parliament for the provision of Receiving Houses for drowned and suffocated persons in every parish in England, and to establish schools where medical students could be taught the principles of resuscitation. In 1778 he was appointed Registrar for the Society, and edited the Society's Annual Reports from 1780 until his death. ------------ Don Montague Dr William Hawes is said to have been son of Thomas Hawes, son of another Thomas Hawes and wife Martha, son of ??? Hawes, the last of these a market gardener of Twyford, Berkshire, England.
