Edmund (Mun)
Maskelyne
1698 - 1744

Edmund (Mun)
Maskelyne
, Secretary of State's Office(r). List of Officials at Accession of George II 11 June 1727 SOUTHERN DEPARTMENT Secretary of State Clerks Maskelyne, E. -------------- DNB 2004 edition, describes him as a clerk of the Duke of Newcastle and Secretary of State. He followed his elder brother to become one of the seven (the numbervaried) Clarks to the Secretary of State in 1716. This post was rather like a civil servant's of today except that he was a private employee of the Secretary of State rather than a state employee. During his last twenty years he served under Thomas Pelles Holles, Duke of Newcastle. In 1735, he received the additional appointment as Deputy to one of the Clerks of the Signet, Charles Delafaye, who had been one of Newcastle's Under Secretaries until the previous year. This was an office concerned with the stamping of documents, by this date nearly a suinecure, which nevertheless brought in a salary and forwhich the Deputy would have received a percentage of all fees received. They moved from Kensington Gore to Tothill st in 1736.
