Research chemist war office (1939). --------- ...Warehouseman by day and a student by night, mastered Latin, Greek and Hebrew and eventually became a Baptist minister. After John had been forced to leave school at the age of fourteen through the family's straightened circumstances, he worked in an industrial laboratory in Leeds, matriculated by evening study and then moved to London, where he worked at Hodgson's the london book dealers. Although passionately interested in chemistry, he decided to first take a degree in classics at London University. When the First World War broke out, Taylor enlisted and after being injured in the trenches in 1915, he was transferred to the Ministry of Munitions, where he took charge of a nitrating chamber used in the production of enormous quantities of nitroglycerine needed for the war. He ended the war in the chemical research laboratories, where there and later he carried out distinguished research work. After the war Taylor spent some time as a cataloguer for Hodgsons, but soon joined Sotheby's as a full-time cataloguer in the books and manuscripts department. There his first hand experience as a scientist stood him in good stead as he catalogued the scientific and medical books handled by Sotheby's. During the Second World War Taylor served in Military Intelligence where he once again rendered distinguished service, particularly in the development of the mico-dot for compressing large quantities of information into a small area. He returned to Sotheby's at the end of the war and continued with the firm until his retirement in 1968. He died in 1979. ..." cf.The Investigation of Difficult Things: Essays on Newton and the History of ...
