Sarah Welsh , Noel Purdon n.purdon@optusnet.com.au> writes (2005): How interesting that the list has recently started to murmur of rivers and their edible inhabitants.( Even though you're from British Colombia, I'm sure your interest in SALMON is strictly genealogical.) -The youngest WELSH daughter,Sarah,b.Madras 1817, m. William Broome SALMON of the Bombay Staff Corps in Poona on 17 Nov 1836. He rose to the rank of Lt General and died at Koonor in 1898. They had a large family, and Sarah was affectionately known by her many nephews and nieces as 'the little aunt'. She died in 1890 in Paignton. - Their eldest daughter Bellina m.her 1st cousin John ELDER,son of Matilda WELSH and Lt Col Alexander Macdonald ELDER ,in Belgaum 1827. -The third,Emma, regarded as the 'Belle of Belgaum' according to her grandson, married Major General DENNIS in 1866. -The grandson referred to above was the Chevalier Geoffrey MARESCAUX de Saubruit,RN. born in Kilkenny in 1901. His Georgian mansion, shared with 3 other eccentric aristocrats ,is the subject of Andrew Bush's famous photograpic collection ' Bonnettstown:A House in Ireland.' -Before his death in 1986 he had corresponded with A.Francis STEUART, his distant cousin ,the collector of family portraits and author of a biography of Francis and William LIGHT ,'The Founders of Adelaide and Penang' He also knew personally many of the other cousins, and visited them in the '20s. In a series of jottings collated by my own cousin and refined by his son he mentions a spawn of SALMON of various generations which I have not traced further, but of whom I would welcome any line of descent. For anyone with the above surnames or connections, it's obviously happy fishing. Noel Purdon ______________________________
