William Banks formerly Hodgkinson formerly Banks 1719 - 1761
William Banks formerly Hodgkinson formerly Banks, MP for Grampound, Peterborough, a rotten borough. A successful Lincolnshire doctor?? who became sheriff of his county. He inherited Revesby Abbey since his brother Joseph predeceased their father. He also succeeded to the estates of his maternal grandfather and took the name Hodgkinson. When he became the main heir to his father, he reverted back to Banks. Records, Historical and Antiquarian, of Parishes Round Hornecastle, Page 167 Describing the parish church at Revesby ".......against the west wall of this (north) aisle is a massive marble monument surmounted by a bust, probably the old monument renewed,.... Right inscription, William Banks, born 1719, died 1761, married Sarah Bate, and left issue, (1) Joseph, afterwards Sir Joseph Banks, (2) Sarah Sophia, born 1744, died 1818." NB William's birth date does not agree other sources. Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th Edition. According to Ince, his maternal grandfather in his will " To his grandson Wm BANKS 2 son of Jos(ep)h BANKS junr by his testors dau Ann for life on condition of taking name of HODGKINSON rem(ainde)r to his male issue &c."
