Francis Fowke 1789 - 1826
Francis Fowke , of Boughrood Castle, at which he was responsible for major alterations, educ. Eton (Oppidan), where he boarded in the house of Mr Sherry, Lt. (06 Dec 1810), Capt. 14th Light Dragoons (1801) serving in Portugal, Spain & France. (not married). {He was wounded at the Battle of Salamanca in 1812.) His portrait was painted by Opie and was in the possession of Ada Hoskins (ca 1920). Played violin and organ. As an overseer of the poor, he sent his butler to represent him at Vestry meetings. He was responsible for major alterations to the exterior and interior of Boughrood catle, and left debts of £4,473 1s 3d at his death. He ackowledged his illegitimate daughter. He was "much above 6 ft", but not robust, His father then bought him a cornetcy (later, a lieutenantcy) in the 14th Light Dragoons, and he served in Portugal, Spain and France, until 1814. He was wounded before Salamanca but returned to his regiment in time to take part in the assault, Jul 22 1812.
